Installing a self-signed certificate in Windows 7

Have you tried it and found it doesn’t work like it used to? There’s a simple trick to get it to work. It’s starting up Internet Explorer as an Administrator.

  • Locate the Internet Explorer shortcut in the Start Menu and right click. Select Run as Administrator.
  • Navigate to the site with the self-signed certificate.
  • Click on “Continue to this website (not recommended)
  • In the Internet Explorer address bar, click on the Certificate Error message. A drop down box will appear warning you about the untrusted certificate. Click on the View Certificates link at the bottom of the box.
  • A Certificates dialog box will appear. Click on Install certificate.
  • This starts the Certificate Import Wizard. Click next.
  • Click on the radio button “Place all certificates in the following store” and click the Browse button.
  • Select “Trusted Root Certification Authorities” and click OK.
  • Click Next and the Finish to close the Certificate Import Wizard.
  • You’ll get a warning message about the certificate; click Yes to close the box. Another box will appear letting you know the import was successful. Click OK to close this message box.
  • Click OK to close the Certificates dialog box.
